Why Governors Met Tinubu in Lagos — Sule

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has explained that the recent gathering of governors in Lagos was aimed at briefing President Bola Tinubu on pressing security challenges and strategising ahead of the All Progressives Congress (APC) convention.

Sule spoke on Monday, March 23, 2026, on the sidelines of his investiture as Patron of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) in Abuja.

According to him, the governors’ meeting in Lagos on Sunday, March 22, 2026, involved extensive deliberations on national security and party affairs.

“After having lunch, we had a lengthy meeting, especially on areas of security, which we presented before the President,” Sule said.

He added that the governors also held prolonged discussions late into the night in preparation for the APC convention, noting that the meeting extended until after 2 a.m.

The governor explained that his tight schedule, occasioned by the Lagos meeting, forced a last-minute change of venue for his investiture ceremony from Lafia to Abuja.

The meeting, held at Eko Hotel in Victoria Island, followed an earlier visit by the governors to President Tinubu at his Ikoyi residence. It was presided over by the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, while Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, served as host.

Although 31 governors were expected, 21 attended the meeting, including Mai Mala Buni (Yobe), Dapo Abiodun (Ogun), Sheriff Oborevwori (Delta), Lucky Aiyedatiwa (Ondo), Bassey Otu (Cross River), Agbu Kefas (Taraba), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), and Monday Okpebholo (Edo), among others.

Speaking further at the investiture, Sule highlighted the importance of leadership and innovation in national development, expressing admiration for the institute’s role in promoting these values.

Earlier, the President and Chairman of the NIPR Governing Council, Ike Neliaku, described Sule as a visionary leader and commended his contributions to the institute and governance in Nasarawa State.

He also noted significant improvements in the state’s governance perception ratings, stating that Nasarawa’s score rose from 30.4 per cent in 2024 to 83.6 per cent in 2026 following reforms implemented by the administration.
