In line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, The Nigerian Federal Government has successfully completed the rehabilitation of the 63-kilometer Port Harcourt – Aba railway project, a significant step in the broader Port Harcourt-Maiduguri railroad initiative led by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration.
According to Mr. Fidet Okhiria, Managing Director of the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC), train services are expected to commence in the coming months once finishing touches on the tracks are finalized.
Truth Live News gathered that Mr Okhiria emphasized the phased approach to the project, with tracks laid up to Aba in Abia. While main tracks are in place, the current focus is on installing loop and side lines for a seamless initiation of rail services. Okhiria addressed concerns about potential vandalism, stressing the need to safeguard the tracks for public benefit and stating that operations are set to begin within months.
To address immediate needs, Okhiria revealed plans to start operations before the arrival of awarded rolling stock, consisting of both narrow and standard gauge wagons. He emphasized the urgency to prevent the deterioration of the tracks and deter potential vandals.
Highlighting the government’s commitment, Okhiria assured the public that the Port Harcourt-Maiduguri rail tracks are projected to be fully laid within three years. The NRC aims to enhance the country’s rail network, providing a reliable and efficient means of transportation for the Nigerian people. The completion of the Port Harcourt – Aba railway project is a crucial milestone, signaling progress in Nigeria’s efforts to strengthen its rail infrastructure.
