Tributes are pouring in following the death of Pope Francis, who passed away at the age of 88, just a day after leading Easter Sunday celebrations at the Vatican.
Among those mourning his death is Professor Temitope Ilori, Director General of Nigeria’s National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA).
In a heartfelt statement released on Tuesday, she expressed deep sorrow over the Pope’s passing and extended condolences to the Vatican, the Community of Sant’Egidio, the Catholic Caritas Foundation in Nigeria, and the global Catholic community.
“Pope Francis was not only a spiritual leader, but also a relentless advocate for the vulnerable,” the statement read.
“He echoed his support for the global response to HIV/AIDS, reminding us all of the need for love, mercy, equity, faith, and humanity in public health. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we strive for a world where no one is left behind.”
President Bola Tinubu also paid tribute, describing the Pope as “a humble servant of God, a tireless champion of the poor, and a guiding light for millions.”
In a personally signed statement, the President called the Pope’s death “a sacred return to his Maker at a time of renewed hope for Christians.”
Pope Francis’ death marks the end of a papacy defined by compassion, simplicity, and a strong voice for the marginalized.
