Head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, has condemned in its entirety the recent wave of attacks that have greeted some communities across Nigeria in the recent times.

In a statement on his official X account, the pontiff said he received the news of the violence with sorrow and concern.

“It is with sorrow and concern that I learnt of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life. I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism,” he wrote.

He called on the Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts to ensure the safety and protection of every Nigerian.

“I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen,” he stated.

Pope’s comment came after Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, condemned the attacks, saying the UN was in solidarity with Nigeria and supports the government’s efforts to combat terrorism.

Recall that over 100 persons were murdered in Woro and neighbouring communities, in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State on Tuesday last week.

Local authorities in the communities said at least 75 residents were buried on Wednesday and 13 others on Thursday following the deadly attacks.

Several other persons have been declared missing as the incident continued to generate widespread condemnation within and outside the shore of the country.
