Rivers Crisis: APC Chair Calls For State of Emergency

Toba Owojaiye reporting

Port Harcourt, Rivers State

Amidst the escalating crisis in Rivers state, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has reiterated its plea to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, urging him to declare a state of emergency without delay. The party stressed the critical need for Armed Forces deployment to key locations across the state to prevent further deterioration of law and order.

Speaking at a press conference duly monitored by Truth Live News, in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, Chief Tony Okocha, the caretaker chairman of the APC, highlighted alarming signs of lawlessness fueled by non-state actors. He warned that failure to address the situation promptly could lead to irreversible consequences.

“Rivers State is currently embroiled in conflict. The enactment of Local Government Law No. 2 of 2024 has already invalidated the use of caretaker committee chairmen. If the court rules in favor of these chairmen tomorrow, June 20, 2024, will we witness the presence of dual chairmen in each local government?” Okocha questioned.

He further clarified that the controversial Law No. 2 of 2024 was not designed to extend the tenure of former chairmen but rather to guide future governance structures.
