Russia’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, praised Donald Trump’s administration for its realistic approach to Ukraine peace talks.
Zakharova referenced Trump’s remarks, where he blamed Joe Biden for Russia’s war in Ukraine and for suggesting Kyiv’s potential NATO membership.
This comes after US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated that NATO membership for Ukraine is unlikely in a negotiated settlement.
Zakharova emphasized that Trump’s views align with Russia’s perspective, highlighting the importance of realism in peace talks.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 was without provocation, at a time when NATO membership for Ukraine seemed distant.
NATO’s “open door policy” allows countries meeting specific criteria to join, as seen in Finland and Sweden’s membership in 2023.
