The Nigerian Senate has passed a vote of confidence on its President, Godswill Akpabio amidst the ongoing controversy of sexual harassment allegations against the leader of Nigeria’s hallowed chamber.
The motion was introduced by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele on Thursday, who emphasized the need to reaffirm support for Akpabio. It was seconded by Olalere Oyewumi, deputy minority leader and senator representing Osun West.
The motion was overwhelmingly approved by senators, signaling strong backing for Akpabio.
The vote comes just two days after Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, representing Kogi Central, accused Akpabio of sexual harassment while addressing the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in New York. She claimed that her suspension from the Senate on March 6, 2025, was a direct result of her petition against Akpabio.
“Five days ago, on the 6th of March 2025, I was suspended as a senator illegally because I submitted a petition of sexual harassment against the president of the Nigerian Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio,” Akpoti-Uduaghan told the IPU.
However, Bamidele denied the claim, stating that her suspension was unrelated to the allegations. Instead, he argued that the decision stemmed from a complaint filed by Senate Spokesperson Yemi Adaramodu, citing misconduct in the chamber.
Bamidele also stated that since Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations are already before a court of law, the Senate would not interfere in the legal proceedings.
Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin then called for a vote on the motion, which was met with a resounding “aye” from the chamber.
The controversy surrounding Akpabio continues to divide public opinion, with supporters viewing the Senate’s decision as a show of unity, while critics question the handling of the allegations against him.
