NIGERIA, ABUJA – Senate President Godswill Obot Akpabio has reaffirmed Nigeria’s strong diplomatic ties with Cuba, calling for deeper cooperation and condemning the longstanding economic embargo imposed on the Caribbean nation.
Speaking on Monday, March 17, 2025, during a meeting with Cuba’s Foreign Minister, Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, Akpabio emphasized the historical bond between both nations, rooted in shared struggles and a commitment to justice.
He praised Cuba’s unwavering support for Africa, particularly its contributions to the fight against apartheid and colonialism.
“Nigeria and Cuba share a bond shaped by history, strengthened by struggle, and anchored in mutual respect,” Akpabio stated.
He urged both nations to move beyond historical ties and collaborate in key sectors such as trade, education, healthcare, technology, and cultural exchange.
The Senate President also condemned the economic embargo on Cuba, describing it as outdated, unjust, and a violation of international law. “Nigeria has consistently stood at the United Nations, rejecting this blockade and demanding justice for the Cuban people,” he added.
