Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, just like his other governors, has begun the payment of the N70,000 new national minimum wage to state workers, effective Monday.
The payment will cover the state civil servants and local governments staff across the state.
This move is in compliance with the federal government’s approved national minimum wage and fulfills the governor’s promise to workers.
The Governor appealed to civil servants in the state to reciprocate the gesture by demonstrating renewed commitment, hard work, punctuality, and seriousness in their duties.
He also vowed to sustain the prompt payment of salaries between the 19th and 22nd of every month, maintaining his administration’s workers’ friendly stance.
He said that the prompt payment is a significant improvement from the previous administration, where workers received salaries after 50 days, instead of the usual 25-30 days.
Aliyu added that the state government has allocated N500 million monthly to clear the backlog of unpaid gratuity for retirees and an extra N300 million to pay those who retired from 2023 onwards.
He said, the purpose is to ensure that no civil servant is owed gratuity by the state government by the end of the present administration’s tenure.
