Tobi Amusan has announced her return to competitive action in style finishing second in the women’s 200m at the Velocity Fest in Jamaica and signalling that Nigeria’s world record holder is in good shape heading into what promises to be another demanding season on the global stage.
The world record holder in the 100m hurdles clocked a season’s best of 23.25 seconds, placing behind Jamaica’s Elaine Thompson-Herah who won the race in 22.61 seconds. Ackera Nugent came third in 23.35 seconds.
The 200m is not Amusan’s primary event, as her signature discipline is the 100m hurdles, where she holds the world record of 12.12 seconds set during the semi-finals of the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon. Her decision to open her 2026 campaign in the flat sprint rather than the hurdles reflects a calculated strategic approach. Her choice to open the season in the 200m reflects a strategic approach to building speed endurance ahead of her hurdles campaign. With major competitions on the horizon including global championships and elite circuit meets, this early outing serves as a foundation for peak performance later in the season.
The result also continues a pattern of strong performances for Amusan at this specific meet. This is not Amusan’s first outing at the Velocity Fest. At the 2025 edition of the meet, she impressed by winning the women’s 100m A final, underlining her versatility across sprint events.
Amusan’s return to form comes on the back of a strong 2025 campaign. Her silver medal at the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo reinforced her status as a global contender, and with the 2026 season now underway, her early run in Jamaica suggests she is on track for another strong campaign.
Amusan currently trains with the Racers Track Club under legendary Jamaican coach Glen Mills.
