VAR Plays Crucial Role in Super Falcons’ WAFCON Victory — Esther Okoronkwo

Esther Okoronkwo, a star player for the Super Falcons, credits the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) for helping her team secure a 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.

Recall that the Super Falcons came from behind to beat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final, with Okoronkwo scoring one goal and providing an assist.

A contentious penalty decision was reversed by the referee after VAR intervention, which Okoronkwo confessed was crucial to the team’s victory.

“I felt like she [the referee] got most of the calls right. Thank God, there’s VAR — she called a penalty against us, but she was able to go to the monitor and saw it wasn’t a penalty,” Okoronkwo said in a post-match press conference.

The Super Falcons have been commended by the President of Nigeria for their triumphant victory over the hosts.
