The Supreme Court has deferred its decision on the Federal Government’s lawsuit aimed at securing full autonomy for the 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) across Nigeria.
Truth Live News gathered that a seven-man panel of the court, led by Justice Garba Lawal, on Thursday, okayed the matter for judgement, after governors of the 36 States of the Federation, through their respective Attorney-Generals, adopted their briefs of argument.
The states, in separate preliminary objections they filed before the apex court, sought the dismissal of the suit with substantial cost.
The case, initiated by the Attorney-General of the Federation, seeks to prevent state governors from unilaterally dissolving democratically elected local government leaders and to ensure direct allocation of funds from the Federation Account to LGAs.
State governments, through their Attorneys-General, have opposed the suit, arguing that the AGF lacked the legal standing to file it and alleging procedural irregularities.
The court, led by Justice Garba Lawal, indicated it will announce the judgement date after hearing arguments from all parties involved.
