Five persons tragically lost their lives in a boat accident in Anambra State while journeying from Kogi State via the River Niger.
The incident took place early Sunday morning, prompting bystanders to rescue victims near the banks of Onitsha. While the identities of the deceased remain unknown, they were reportedly from a riverine area in Kogi State, traveling to Onitsha for various business purposes.
Confirming the distressing occurrence, Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) DSP Ikenga Tochukwu stated that the Police Command’s marine operatives swiftly responded to a distress call. Approximately 30 passengers were rescued alive, but tragically, five bodies were recovered from the river along with the capsized boat.
“Our marine operatives on getting the distress call about the incident responded swiftly. We were able to rescue over 30 of the passengers alive and recover the five lifeless bodies in the depths of the sea and the capsized boat.
“Preliminary information revealed that the boat was from Kogi State, conveying goods and passengers before the unfortunate incident occurred.
“Meanwhile, the cause is yet to be ascertained, as the investigation is ongoing.”
