Five children were on Friday, rescued from two suspected child traffickers in Auchi, Etsako East Local Government Area of Edo State.
The children who travelled unaccompanied, were said to have been on their way from Kaduna to the market town of Onitsha, Anambra State when they were arrested at Auchi.
According to a source, the children, all girls, aged between seven and nine had arrived Auchi in the evening from Kaduna and were trying to establish contact with the two suspected female traffickers who were supposed to take them to Onitsha when some curious co-passengers became suspicious as a result of the timidity and innocence of the children who they deemed too young to travel on their own.
Consequently, with the help of the driver and his colleagues at Onitsha Park in Auchi, the women who were called to come over and pick up the children as a result of information provided by the forlorn children were quizzed.
The two suspected traffickers who were later identified as Vera Okhakhu and Blessing Agbokha, claimed to be indigenes of Fugar, Etsako Central Local Government Area of the state.
The source disclosed that when the two women were questioned, before they were handed over to policemen at the Auchi Police Divisional Headquarters for further investigations, the suspects confessed to be child traffickers and that they were actually taking the children to Onitsha for menial job.
However, efforts to contact the Edo State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Chidi Nwanbuzor was not successful as his cell phone was constantly engage.
