Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal is expected to face punishment from UEFA for grabbing Arsenal forward Bukayo Saka by the neck during a heated exchange at halftime of their Champions League quarter-final match.
The incident occurred after Saka attempted a Panenka penalty, which was saved by Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, seemingly infuriating Carvajal, who was watching from the stands due to injury.
Carvajal entered the pitch at halftime and confronted Saka in the tunnel, catching his neck and tugging his arm while Saka was leaving quietly.
UEFA may sanction Carvajal for two disciplinary rule breaches: participating in a match when not eligible to play and assaulting another player or person present at the match.
Carvajal could face up to a four-game suspension in UEFA competitions, affecting Real Madrid or any other club he represents.
UEFA will likely investigate the incident, relying on reports filed by match officials or video evidence.
Former PGMOL chief Keith Hackett believes Real Madrid should be reported for the incident, stating that Carvajal’s behaviour was unacceptable and that the Spanish giants could face punishment.
