Hundreds of University of Ibadan medical students staged a peaceful protest on Thursday against the disconnection of their hostels from the electricity supply grid by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC).
The students, who are undergoing medical training at the University College Hospital (UCH), reside in the hostels within the hospital.
The protest was sparked by the IBEDC’s decision to restore electricity supply to the UCH but leave the hostels disconnected.
The students carried placards with messages such as “Enough is enough,” “IBEDC give us light,” and “We have been in darkness for 105 days.”
The Students Union President, Bolaji Aweda, led the protest and declared that the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, had promised to restore power to the entire UCH.
Aweda warned that the protests would continue until the electricity supply to their hostels was restored.
“We are here to protest the deliberate disconnection of our halls of residence from the electricity restored to UCH.
“We will be here until they restore our electricity. If they don’t restore it, we will continue to protest,” Aweda said.
