In a recent incident at the Ministry of Works in Abuja, a protest erupted as Minister Dave Umahi locked out over 300 staff and directors who arrived late for work. Video footage captured the employees chanting phrases like ‘He must go!’ and ‘Solidarity forever!’ as they expressed their discontent with the minister’s actions. Some workers explained that they lived far from the office, which contributed to their delayed arrival.
The situation caused apprehension at the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, effectively halting normal operations. Minister Umahi’s decision to deny latecomers access to the ministry for over four hours led to heightened tensions. Eventually, when the gate was reopened, the workers chose to protest rather than enter the building, effectively confining the minister to his office.
This protest also disrupted plans for a courtesy visit by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu. Pictures revealed that Islamic adherents even performed prayers at the ministry’s gate during the standoff.
Thankfully, the situation eventually calmed down, and employees returned to their respective offices. One anonymous worker expressed shock over the minister’s actions, emphasizing that Umahi seemed out of touch with the challenges faced by staff who reside in distant areas outside the city center. This incident highlights the importance of understanding the unique circumstances of employees and fostering a conducive work environment.
