United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an immediate halt to attacks on Israel and the release of all hostages following a series of devastating attacks on Israeli towns and cities.

Guterres also cautioned Israel’s army to conduct its operations in accordance with international law.

The U.N. Secretary-General who said this durng a press conference held at the UN headquarters in New York, expressed understanding for the grievances of the Palestinian people but strongly condemned the use of terrorism or violence against civilians.

He affirmed the UN’s commitment to working towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict.

“I recognize the legitimate grievances of the Palestinian people, but nothing can justify these acts of terror and the killing, maiming, and abduction of civilians. I reiterate my call to immediately cease these attacks and release all hostages,” Guterres stated.

Guterres further expressed deep distress over Israel’s plan to impose a complete siege on the entire Gaza Strip, home to over 2 million people, which would restrict the entry of food, fuel, and electricity supply.

He warned that the humanitarian situation in Gaza, which was already dire, would deteriorate significantly.

The UN Secretary-General emphasized the urgent need to allow relief supplies and aid workers access to Gaza, where over 120,000 people have been internally displaced. Damage to essential facilities has affected the lives of more than 400,000 people, and the Gaza power plant, now the sole source of electricity, is running out of fuel.

Guterres said he and U.N. Middle East envoy Tor Wennesland are speaking with regional leaders to voice their concern and outrage, and to advance efforts to avoid any spillover to the wider Middle East.

He added that the recent events are part of a larger context and called for an end to the cycle of bloodshed, hatred, and polarization.

Guterres urged a negotiated peace through a two-state solution that addresses Israel’s security needs and the national aspirations of the Palestinians.
