The Trump administration has confirmed that a 25% global tariff on cars and trucks will take effect today, Thursday, April 3, 2025, with duties on automotive parts imports to follow on May 3.
The tariffs, announced in a Federal Register notice, will be imposed at 12:01 am EDT, with the parts list including dozens of tariff codes, such as engines, transmissions, and electrical components.
Domestic producers will be able to request additions to the list, and importers can pay the 25% duty only on the non-US content of the order for vehicles qualifying under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement’s rules of origin.
The tariffs are expected to cover nearly $600 billion worth of vehicles and auto parts imports annually, with the list of affected parts including nearly 150 categories, such as lithium-ion batteries and brake hoses.
The move is part of Trump’s broader effort to protect American businesses and boost manufacturing within the US, but analysts warn it could lead to higher prices for consumers and disrupt global car trade and supply chains.
