Venus Williams has become the second-oldest woman to win a WTA Tour-level singles match, defeating fellow American Peyton Stearns 6-3, 6-4 at the Washington Open on Tuesday.

The outcome of the match means Williams is now the oldest woman to win a singles match on tour since Martina Navratilova did at the age of 47 back in 2004.

Williams has now progressed to the second round of the WTA and ATP DC Open.

Recall that the seven-time singles Grand Slam winner, had gained entry to the tournament through a wildcard.

Williams had not played since March 2024 when she won 14 Grand Slams in the doubles alongside her sister Serena in the past.
