In her presentation before the joint National Assembly Committee on Humanitarian Affairs, and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, Nigeria’s Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, expressed her unwavering commitment to meeting the mandate given by President Bola Tinubu. She emphasized the need to address humanitarian crises and poverty challenges in the country.
During the budget defense, Dr. Edu highlighted that Nigeria is grappling with a humanitarian crisis affecting 16 million people, including refugees and migrants. She stressed the urgency of transitioning from emergency responses to implementing sustainable solutions through a resilient system.
Dr. Edu urged the National Assembly to hold her and her team accountable for delivering on the mandate. She emphasized her determination, stating, “I am 100% determined to meet that mandate given to me by President Bola Tinubu working with my team.”
Addressing the pressing issue of poverty, she noted that over 70 million Nigerians live below the poverty line, emphasizing the need for immediate action. Dr. Edu acknowledged President Tinubu’s focus on poverty eradication and outlined more than 23 programs to address multidimensional poverty.
She called on the National Assembly to support the Ministry with a budget that aligns with its mandate. Dr. Edu emphasized the importance of accountability and collaboration, stating, “The Senate and the House of Representatives can hold us accountable for what is done as it concerns the Renewed Hope Agenda Mandate of Mr. President.”
Committing to improvements and a departure from business as usual, Dr. Edu assured that Nigerians would feel the impact where it is needed most. She pledged to work towards ensuring that the grassroots receive their due, aligning with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Senator Kaka Shehu Lawan, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, affirmed the National Assembly’s readiness to partner with the Ministry. He assured oversight visits and comprehensive assessments to ensure adequate funding for the ministry and its agencies.
In response, Dr. Edu expressed gratitude for the support and reiterated her commitment to achieving meaningful impact in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda. Senator Lawan concluded with encouraging words, stating, “You have started well, you will succeed.”
