The Emir of Kano, Khalifa Dr. Muhammadu Sanusi II, has been granted special admission to pursue a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree in Common Law and Sharia at Northwest University, Kano.
An official letter from the university, dated January 12, 2026, and addressed to the Emir at his palace in Gidan Rumfa, Kano, confirms his admission into the programme at 200 Level, effective from the 2024/2025 academic session. The university stated that the admission was approved after the Emir satisfied the requirements for special consideration.
“The admission is subject to your compliance with the rules and regulations contained in the Northwest University Student Handbook,” the letter noted.
News of the Emir’s admission broke on January 15, 2026, rapidly gaining traction across social media and news platforms. Many Nigerians have hailed the move as deeply inspiring, viewing it as a profound statement on the value of lifelong learning regardless of one’s status or prior accomplishments.
Despite an already distinguished academic portfolio, the Emir has opted to return to formal studies. He holds a BSc and MSc in Economics from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and a BA in Islamic Studies and Sharia from the International University of Africa in Khartoum. In 2025, he earned a PhD in Islamic Law from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
