Nigeria’s Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal filed by Aminu Sule Lamido, son of former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, challenging his conviction for failing to declare $40,000 in cash while travelling out of the country and for making a false foreign currency declaration.
In a unanimous judgment delivered on Friday, January 16, 2026, a five-member panel of the apex court resolved all issues against the appellant, affirming the decisions of both the Court of Appeal sitting in Kaduna and the Federal High Court in Kano.
Truth Live News reports that the apex court held that the appeal lacked merit, ruling that the prosecution had successfully established its case and that the lower courts were right in their findings and conclusions.
Aminu Sule Lamido was originally convicted on July 12, 2015, by the Federal High Court in Kano on charges instituted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). The trial court found that he failed to declare the sum of $40,000 as required by law and made a false declaration while departing Nigeria.
At the time of his conviction, Aminu, then 34 years old, was also ordered by the court to forfeit 25 per cent of the undeclared $40,000 to the Federal Government as part of the sentence.
Dissatisfied with the ruling, Aminu had approached the Court of Appeal in Kaduna, which upheld the conviction and sentence. His further appeal to the Supreme Court has now been conclusively dismissed, effectively bringing the long-running legal battle to an end.
