Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has brushed off the impeachment notice issued against him and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, by the state House of Assembly, describing it as a “love letter.”
Speaking as Special Guest at the finals of the 2026 Port Harcourt Polo Tournament on Saturday, Fubara made his first public comments on the impeachment saga, emphasizing his commitment to peace and the protection of lives and property.
The governor pledged not to support, directly or indirectly, any action capable of undermining peace and safety in the state. He reaffirmed his position, stating, “What is important is that I am still the Governor of Rivers State, and we will continue to do what we have promised the Rivers people.”
Fubara lamented the recurring political crises that have coincided with the annual polo tournament over the past three years.
He said, “It is really unfortunate that each time you are having your tournament, there is always one problem. In 2024, you came to me and made some promises, but that January was hell. In 2025, you didn’t bother to come to me. This 2026, which I thought would be the finest, just landed me a love letter.”
He expressed satisfaction with the peaceful conduct of the week-long event, noting, “I am happy that you had your tournament for one week, and the president of the Port Harcourt Polo Club told me there was no incident. It shows that we are working and that Rivers State is safe. That is the basic responsibility of government.”
Truth Live News recalls that the Rivers State House of Assembly had last Thursday written to the State Chief Judge requesting the constitution of a seven-man panel to investigate alleged gross misconduct against the governor and his deputy.
Despite the political tensions, Fubara assured that his administration would continue discharging its responsibilities and supporting individuals and groups genuinely committed to the state’s progress. He also promised efforts to upgrade the Port Harcourt Polo Club, renowned for one of the country’s best natural grass polo pitches.
The governor encouraged participants, including foreign players from India and Argentina, as well as dignitaries such as the Argentine Ambassador to Nigeria, to enjoy Port Harcourt’s serenity and counter negative narratives by sharing positive experiences.
