Prioritise Security, Healthcare, Education, Poverty Reduction as True Pillars of Development — Obi Tasks Govt

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has called on governments at all levels and affluent Nigerians to redirect focus and resources towards the foundational pillars essential for national progress: security, healthcare, education, and poverty reduction.

In a post on his verified X handle on Thursday, Obi described these areas as the bedrock of any just and prosperous society.

The appeal followed his recent visit to Benin City on Tuesday, February 24, where he continued his longstanding support for critical development sectors.

“On Tuesday, 24 February, in continuation of my commitment to supporting critical sectors of development – healthcare, education, and poverty reduction. I visited Benin City. While there, I stopped at the Philomena School of Nursing Sciences, one of the largest nursing institutions in the region,” Obi wrote.

He noted that the visit was not his first to the institution, emphasising his consistent efforts to motivate staff and students nationwide pursuing excellence in healthcare training.

“In further demonstration of this commitment to Philomena School of Nursing Sciences, and to support the school’s facilities as I have done previously, I donated the sum of fifteen million naira,” he added.

Obi then broadened his message into a direct call to action, “I call on the government at all levels, as well as wealthy Nigerians, to channel greater attention and resources toward the critical pillars of development – security, healthcare, education and poverty reduction.”

The statement underscores Obi’s recurring advocacy for prioritising human capital development and social welfare over other expenditures, aligning with his frequent critiques of current governance priorities.

By highlighting both personal action through donations and visits and a broader appeal for collective responsibility, Obi reiterated his vision for sustainable national development rooted in investment in people’s security, health, education, and economic upliftment.
