The philanthropic arm of Chinese tech giant Alibaba Group and the Jack Ma Foundation have announced a $1.5 million grant package targeted at African entrepreneurs tackling critical development challenges across the continent.
The funding forms part of the 8th edition of Africa’s Business Heroes, an initiative designed to spotlight and empower founders building scalable, impact-driven enterprises. The 2026 edition is themed “Defining Africa’s Future Today” and will focus on businesses operating in areas such as climate-smart agriculture, digital finance, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing and emerging technologies.
Speaking on the initiative, the Managing Director for Africa, Zahra Boateng-Baitie, said the programme goes beyond financial support.
“Africa’s future is being shaped by entrepreneurs who are addressing the continent’s most pressing challenges and unlocking its economic potential,” she said. “Beyond the $1.5m in grant funding, ABH equips founders with the strategic support they need to scale sustainable businesses, create jobs and fuel inclusive growth.”
Organisers disclosed that the 2026 cycle will broaden its reach by recognising a top 100 cohort of finalists, while intensifying physical engagement in ten African markets. Particular attention will be given to under-represented countries including Namibia, Tunisia and Zambia.
In addition to grant funding, top 10 finalists will gain access to a fully sponsored immersion programme at Alibaba’s headquarters in Hangzhou, China, where they will participate in executive learning sessions and networking opportunities.
Eligibility criteria require applicants to be African citizens or legal residents who lead registered businesses with at least three years of operational traction and demonstrable social impact.
Since its inception, Africa’s Business Heroes has reportedly attracted more than 30,000 applications annually, positioning it as one of the continent’s most competitive entrepreneurial platforms aimed at accelerating innovation-led economic transformation.
