The National Sports Commission (NSC) said a staggering N18, 775 billion would be needed to fix the dilapidated Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.
Investigations show that church programmes and other sports activities have largely contributed to the deplorable state of the stadium with little efforts made to ply the income generated into the maintenance of the stadium.
According to the annual appropriation the NSC sent to the National Assembly for appraisal specifically budgeted the amount for the rehabilitation and upgrading of the Main bowl phase 1, describing it as an ongoing project.
The Sports Commission also stated in the annual estimation that it will expend the sum of N50 million provision of alternative independent power, including power bank to achieve uninterrupted power supply and reduce diesel consumption to both package A and B.
According to the commission; “the rehabilitation and upgrading of Moshood Abiola National Stadium, (main bowl phase 1) Abuja, an ongoing project will cost N18, 775 billion.
“Provision of alternative independent power (solarisation project including power bank to achieve uninterrupted power supply and reduce diesel consumption) to package A and B Moshood Abiola National stadium and other critical sporting infrastructure will gulp N50 million,” the commission noted.
While the provision of modern medical equipments in the commission’s clinics will cost N2.77 billion, the completion of High Performance Centre for athletes at the stadium will gulp a sum of N5.8 billion.
