In a recent video sermon that has ignited controversy, the outspoken Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi has once again brought the nation’s security situation to the forefront. On his official Facebook page, Sheikh Gumi expressed skepticism about entrusting Nigeria’s national security to Christians and Southerners, raising concerns over religious and regional divisions.
The cleric asserted that Muslim figures in top security positions lack real authority and are mere figureheads. Notably, he referred to Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory Minister, as “Satan” for hosting the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria in his office. This remark further escalates the religious and regional tensions in the country.
Sheikh Gumi’s statements extended to political predictions, as he suggested that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu could face obstacles in his quest for an eight-year term. He also criticized those who campaigned for a Muslim-Muslim ticket, branding them as hypocrites driven by financial motives.
Expressing concerns over collaboration between Nigeria and Israel in security matters, Sheikh Gumi warned that such partnerships might lead to security issues and even profiled individuals who resembled him.
He emphasized the need for Northerners to safeguard their economic interests, insinuating that economic power is concentrated in specific groups, and those deemed untrustworthy may face challenges in business.
The cleric delved into Nigeria’s history of violence and underscored the dangers of concentrating power and weapons in the hands of particular religious or regional groups. He emphasized the necessity of security for all citizens and expressed worries about foreign involvement in Nigeria’s security affairs.
Sheikh Gumi concluded by revealing that he had sought police protection due to perceived threats, highlighting the urgent need for security, even if his views were at odds with the President’s. He raised concerns about external influences, including the Israeli intelligence agency MOSSAD, and called on political leaders to prioritize the nation’s security interests in these turbulent times.
This is more alarming in the wake of the Israel – Palestine ongoing war which has seen protests, deaths and sharp contrast in views across countries.
Sheikh Gumi was a key negotiator for bandits/terror groups during the previous administration. This latest controversy involving Sheikh Gumi highlights the sensitive issues of religion, regionalism, and security in Nigeria, underscoring the complexities and challenges faced in achieving unity and stability in the nation.
