The management of the University of Lagos has criticised the decision of the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities to embark on an industrial action, stating that due process was not followed before the declaration.
The university made this known on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, in a statement issued by the Head of its Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem.
The reaction followed a directive by ASUU UNILAG chapter asking lecturers to withdraw their services from Wednesday after a congress held on Tuesday, March 10, 2026.
The union said the decision was prompted by what it described as “amputated” salaries received by lecturers for January and February.
Chairman of ASUU UNILAG, Idou Keinde, said the lecturers did not receive the full components of their salaries, including the Consolidated Salary Structure for Academics, Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance and Professorial Allowance.
Keinde stated that the lecturers would not return to work until their full salaries are paid.
Responding to the development, the university management said it would continue engaging with the union’s leadership to resolve the issues, particularly concerns relating to unpaid Consolidated Academic Teaching Allowances.
According to the statement, the management remains committed to the welfare of both staff and students and is working towards addressing the concerns raised by the union.
While discussions continue, the university insisted that ongoing examinations will proceed as scheduled.
The management noted that students are currently at a critical stage of the academic session, with semester examinations already underway.
It warned that any disruption could negatively affect students, especially those preparing for the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme, internships and those scheduled to proceed to the Nigerian Law School.
However, the university explained that courses where students have been informed by their Deans or Heads of Department that examinations will not hold will be rescheduled.
UNILAG management further directed that all examinations should continue from Thursday, March 12, 2026, while urging deans to ensure proper arrangements for the smooth conduct of the exercise.
The institution also appealed to members of the university community to remain calm and continue their lawful academic activities while dialogue with the ASUU leadership continues toward resolving the dispute.
