Makinde Approves Monthly Top-Up for All Oyo Workers to Cushion Fuel Price Hike

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has approved a N10,000 monthly salary top-up for all state and local government workers for three months beginning in April 2026, describing the intervention as a direct response to the rising cost of fuel and transportation following the ongoing Middle East war-driven petrol price surge.

Makinde made the announcement during a programme held in Ibadan on Monday, stating that the top-up would apply to all workers in Oyo State and local governments starting from April, at least for the first three months, as petrol and transportation support.

“I’m happy to announce that all workers in Oyo State and the local government starting from April, at least for the first three months, will be given N10,000 in addition to their monthly salary as petrol or transportation support. All workers, everybody. It is a flat rate. Maybe it would be extended,” he said.

The governor also signalled that the gesture could extend beyond state and local government employees. “Those who are not working with the Oyo State government may also benefit from it. We will handle it properly to ensure it is all-inclusive,” he added, a statement that raised hopes among private sector workers and market traders in the state who are equally burdened by rising transportation costs.

The announcement comes as Oyo State remains one of only three states still governed by the PDP a political context that gives the welfare gesture added significance as Governor Makinde positions himself as a governor who prioritises workers ahead of the 2027 elections.
