The Abia State Government on Thursday held a state burial service in honour of renowned evangelist, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai, who passed away at the age of 80.
The ceremony, which took place at the International Conference Centre in Umuahia, drew prominent dignitaries from across the country.
Speaking at the event, Governor Alex Otti urged Nigerians to live impactful lives that would earn them positive remembrance after death. He said the late cleric’s legacy should inspire deep reflection on how individuals would be remembered.
“The challenge is for all of us—what would people say when it is our turn?” the governor said.
Otti expressed gratitude to God for Ukpai’s life and noted that the state chose to honour him in recognition of his immense contributions to Abia State, Nigeria, and the global Christian community.
“Our decision to honour him reflects our commitment to giving honour to whom it is due,” he added.
He also extended condolences to the family, encouraging them to grieve with hope, emphasizing the Christian belief in resurrection and eternal life.
Also speaking, Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno, represented by Deputy Governor Senator Akon Eyakenyi, described the late Ukpai as a visionary leader who lived a life worthy of emulation. He urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from the cleric’s faith and dedication.
In his tribute, the National Secretary of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, Rev. Mosy Madugba, described Ukpai as a global voice and a unifying figure among gospel ministers, noting that the fellowship honoured him by placing its flag on his coffin.
Delivering the sermon, PFN President Bishop Francis Wale Oke emphasized the importance of righteous living, stating that the late evangelist exemplified holiness and unwavering commitment to the gospel.
In a vote of thanks, the deceased’s first son, Chidi Uma, expressed appreciation to the Abia State Government and all dignitaries for their support.
The burial ceremony was attended by several high-profile personalities, including Bayelsa State Governor Doye Diri and his wife, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi, members of the National Assembly, state lawmakers, top government officials, clerics, and traditional rulers.
Also present was the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Senator John Azuta Mbata, alongside other respected leaders and community figures.
