
A man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car struck multiple pedestrians in Derby city centre, East Midlands, UK, on Saturday night.
Truth Live News International learnt from Sky News that the incident occurred around 9:30pm on Friar Gate, where a black Suzuki Swift drove into a number of people, leaving seven injured.
Derbyshire Police confirmed the development in a statement, saying:
“We can confirm that seven people were injured when a car was driven into pedestrians in a city centre street.”
The police added that the victims sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries, stressing:
“The seven suffered a range of serious but not life-threatening injuries and we can confirm that contrary to online speculation, no one died in the incident.”
The suspect, a man in his 30s originally from India, was located shortly after the incident and taken into custody. He remains in police custody as investigations continue.
Authorities said he was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving.
Police also noted that investigations are still ongoing and that the motive remains unclear, stating:
“We are keeping an open mind as to the motives.”
Emergency services responded promptly to the scene. The East Midlands Ambulance Service said:
“We received a call at 9.31pm… The caller reported a medical emergency.”
They added:
“We sent a number of resources including three paramedics in three ambulance cars, seven ambulances and our Hazardous Area Response Team.”
All seven victims were transported to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre for treatment.
Police have reassured the public that there is no ongoing threat, while urging witnesses to come forward with useful information.
A witness who arrived shortly after the incident described the scene as chaotic, saying:
“It was such a frightening experience… there was just people everywhere.”
Authorities confirmed that Friar Gate remains closed as investigations continue, advising motorists and residents to avoid the area.
