On Wednesday July 31st, 2024, the Peoples Democratic Party PDP secretariat in Benin city, Edo state was abuzz with excitement as Mrs. Ifenyiwa Ighodalo, wife of the PDP gubernatorial candidate, was seen in high spirits, dancing with women who had gathered to show their support and defect from other parties to back her husband’s aspirations.
Truth Live News reports  that a significant portion of the women in attendance hailed from the South East but are now residents of Edo State. They lauded Mrs. Ighodalo as the only wife of the top three candidates who has been visible and active in the campaign.
Hundreds of women, defecting from the APC and Labour Party, cited the competence of the PDP candidate and the unwavering support of his wife as their reasons for switching allegiance. They noted that such support and visibility was lacking from the spouses of the other candidates. They opined that if the wives of the other candidates do not believe in them enough to campaign for them, why should they join their campaign?
These newly inducted PDP members were primarily women who had never previously voted or directly participated in politics.
The event was vibrant and filled with dancing. Mrs. Ifenyiwa Ighodalo expressed her gratitude to the women for their support and assured them of her accessibility both now and after their anticipated victory in less than 51 days.
