A final-year student of the University of Jos (UNIJOS), Plateau State, Adeyemo Oluwafemi Temitope, has been found dead days after he was declared missing, sparking renewed concerns over security in the area.
Temitope, a 500-level Quantity Surveying student, was reportedly attacked by unknown assailants in Jos, the state capital. His body was later discovered and deposited at the University Teaching Hospital mortuary.
Confirming the development, his close friend, Meshak Gimba, a 400-level Psychology student, disclosed that Temitope had initially been declared missing before the tragic discovery.
“We got a call to come to the hospital, where we found his corpse,” Gimba said, adding that he had earlier circulated the deceased’s photo on social media in search of his whereabouts.
According to available information, local security operatives recovered the body on Wednesday, revealing that the student was attacked near Bauchi Junction, close to his hostel, while returning from the market.
The University’s Chief Security Officer, Agama Solomon, also confirmed the incident, noting that the institution’s management, including the Vice-Chancellor, visited the hospital to verify the identity of the deceased.
“It was confirmed to be him after identification by his close friend,” Solomon stated, adding that the family of the deceased has been notified and is expected to arrive for further arrangements.
The incident comes amid rising insecurity in Jos, following a recent attack in Angwan Rukuba, where several lives were lost. In response to the worsening situation, the university management had earlier ordered the evacuation of students from hostels and suspended ongoing examinations.
As of the time of filing this report, the Plateau State Police Command has yet to issue an official statement on the incident.
