Trump Announces Two-Week Ceasefire with Iran Over Strait of Hormuz

US President Donald Trump has announced a proposed two-week ceasefire with Iran, saying he will suspend military strikes if Tehran agrees to reopen the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

In a statement posted on Truth Social on Tuesday, Mr Trump said the pause in hostilities would depend on Iran ensuring the “complete, immediate, and safe opening” of the waterway, a critical route for global oil shipments.

“This will be a double-sided ceasefire,” he said, indicating that both sides would halt hostilities during the proposed period.

The announcement followed diplomatic efforts led by Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who urged the US president to extend a deadline for potential military action by two weeks to allow for negotiations.

Mr Sharif also called on Iran to reopen the strait as a goodwill gesture.

Earlier on Tuesday, Mr Trump had issued stark warnings, suggesting severe consequences if no agreement was reached. He had previously threatened to target key Iranian infrastructure, including energy facilities and transport networks.

The White House confirmed that the proposal was under review before the announcement, with Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt saying a response would be forthcoming.

Financial markets reacted positively to signs of de-escalation, with oil prices easing following the news.

Iran has previously rejected temporary ceasefire proposals, insisting on a permanent end to hostilities and the lifting of sanctions. However, reports suggest Tehran may consider a short-term pause if supported by international mediators.

The proposed two-week window is intended to create space for broader negotiations, though details on how compliance would be monitored remain unclear.

The situation remains fluid.
