Obi, Kwankwaso Lead ‘Save Democracy’ Rally in Abuja

ABUJA — Prominent opposition figures, including Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, led a large-scale “Save Democracy” rally in Abuja, drawing supporters and political stakeholders to the nation’s capital amid rising tensions over electoral credibility and internal party disputes.

The protest, spearheaded by members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is linked to an ongoing leadership crisis within the party, as well as broader concerns about Nigeria’s democratic processes ahead of future elections.

Demonstrators gathered at strategic locations across the city, with a significant number converging near the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), where they voiced dissatisfaction over alleged partisanship and lack of transparency in electoral administration.

Chanting solidarity songs and carrying placards with inscriptions demanding electoral reforms, the protesters called for accountability and institutional independence, insisting that credible elections remain central to Nigeria’s democratic stability.

The rally, which has so far remained largely peaceful, underscores growing political mobilisation among opposition blocs and signals early realignments as parties and key actors begin positioning ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Security personnel were visibly deployed to monitor the situation and maintain order, while authorities have yet to issue an official response to the demonstrators’ demands.
