A local police division was set ablaze by irate youths on Saturday evening in a shocking turn of events in Ifon, Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State in violent protest stemmed from the alleged torture and subsequent death of a young man while in police custody.
Details surrounding the incident are still emerging, but sources from Ifon, a town bordering Edo State, have disclosed to Daily Trust that the unrest began after an altercation on Valentine’s Day.
The situation escalated when the community learned of the young man’s demise, leading to a large group of protesters storming the police station.
A local source described the scene: “Upon learning of the young man’s death in police custody, a mob of protesters converged on the police station, overwhelming the officers and wreaking havoc.”
Funmilayo Odunlami-Omisanya, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, confirmed the incident and stated that additional police forces have been deployed to quell any further disturbances. She said, “We are aware of the situation and have taken immediate steps to restore order.”
Commissioner of Police Wilfred Afolabi is reportedly on his way to Ifon to oversee the situation, aiming to restore peace and prevent any additional violence in the area.
