Katsina State Approves N3.8bn Loan to Secure 3,890 Hajj Slots for 2026 Pilgrimage

Katsina State government has approved a loan of N3.8 billion to secure 3,890 Hajj slots for its Muslim residents ahead of the 2026 pilgrimage season in Saudi Arabia.

The funding decision, which underscores the state’s commitment to facilitating the religious obligations of its predominantly Muslim population, was reached by the state executive following deliberations on how best to meet the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria’s (NAHCON) deadlines for slot allocation and payment.

The approved loan will be deployed specifically to cover the cost of the pilgrim slots, ensuring that thousands of Katsina indigenes are not denied the opportunity to perform the fifth pillar of Islam.

Officials confirmed that the 3,890 slots represent the state’s full quota for the 2026 Hajj season, and that swift financial action was necessary to prevent the state from losing its allocation to other states ready to pay.

Intending pilgrims are expected to reimburse the state through their individual Hajj savings and contributions, in line with established practice in previous years.

The development has drawn mixed reactions from residents and civil society groups within the state. While many Muslim faithful have welcomed the initiative, praising the government for its responsiveness to the spiritual needs of its people, critics have raised concerns about the prudence of taking on new debt at a time when the state faces pressing infrastructure and social service needs.

The government, however, maintains that the loan is a justified and recoverable expenditure, given that pilgrims will repay their individual costs, and that securing the slots on time is in the overall interest of thousands of families who have long planned and saved for the sacred journey.
