Nigeria on Alert Over Potential Ebola Risk Amid Regional Outbreaks

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has stepped up surveillance and preparedness across the country following rising Ebola cases in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The agency confirmed that no cases have been recorded in Nigeria so far, but warned that the risk of the virus entering the country is high due to international travel and population movement.

According to the NCDC Director-General, Jide Idris, areas such as border communities, transport hubs, and points of entry are being closely monitored because of their vulnerability.

To strengthen readiness, the agency has activated emergency response systems and placed its National Emergency Operations Centre on alert. Rapid response teams and health experts have also been put on standby in case of any suspected outbreak.

Surveillance activities have been intensified nationwide, including monitoring unusual health cases and strengthening screening at borders. Hospitals are also being equipped with updated guidelines, while healthcare workers are receiving training on early detection and infection prevention.

Authorities have advised states to prepare isolation centres, improve logistics, and ensure the availability of medical supplies. Plans are also in place to distribute protective equipment and other essential materials across strategic locations.

The agency warned the public against misinformation and has rolled out awareness campaigns to educate citizens about Ebola Virus Disease, which spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids and not through the air.

Nigeria previously contained an Ebola outbreak in 2014 after swift action limited the spread of the disease, a response that was widely praised internationally.

Health experts say the current situation in parts of Africa highlights the continued risk posed by cross-border movement, despite improvements in disease monitoring systems in recent years.
