The United States has issued a strong warning to Oman against participating in any plan to introduce toll charges for vessels passing through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
In a statement released Thursday, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that Washington would take action against any individuals, entities, or partners involved in implementing or supporting such a system, whether directly or indirectly.
He made it clear that the U.S. government opposes any attempt to impose fees on ships navigating the vital waterway, which serves as a major route for global energy shipments.
The warning underscores growing tensions around control and access to the Strait of Hormuz, a narrow but crucial passage linking the Persian Gulf to international waters. Any disruption or added costs in this corridor could have significant implications for global oil markets and international trade.
U.S. officials signaled that enforcement measures would be applied aggressively if efforts to introduce tolls move forward, reinforcing their stance on maintaining free and open navigation in the region.
