Immigration Crackdown, US Reports 3 Million Deportations

The Donald Trump administration says more than three million undocumented migrants have been deported from the United States since the president returned to office, underscoring the scale of a sweeping immigration crackdown that has placed border enforcement and deportation at the centre of his second-term agenda.

According to a fact sheet released by the US Department of State, the administration also claimed it had gone 15 consecutive months without releasing a single undocumented migrant into the country after apprehension, presenting the figure as evidence of a tougher approach to immigration enforcement.

The administration said the measures form part of President Trump’s broader effort to strengthen immigration controls, prioritise the interests of American citizens and dismantle what it described as a system weakened by historically high levels of illegal immigration during the previous administration.

The reported deportation figure represents one of the administration’s most significant claims about the impact of its immigration policies.

Trump has made mass deportations, tighter border controls and stricter enforcement central promises of his presidency, arguing that tougher measures are necessary to restore control over the country’s immigration system.

The administration has framed the crackdown as a fundamental shift in US immigration policy, with federal authorities seeking to expand enforcement and accelerate the removal of migrants who lack legal status.

The figures and claims outlined by the administration are likely to fuel an already intense national debate over immigration, with supporters arguing that tougher enforcement is necessary to protect national security and public resources, while critics have raised concerns about due process, humanitarian protections and the treatment of migrants.

The latest figures come as the Trump administration continues to pursue one of the most aggressive immigration enforcement agendas in modern US history, with the president repeatedly vowing to make illegal immigration a defining target of his second term.

“President Trump has delivered on his promise to fix the immigration system, prioritize American citizens, and protect U.S. citizenship. The border is sealed. The results are undeniable,” the administration said.

It said more than three million undocumented migrants had been deported, including thousands convicted of violent crimes.

The administration also announced an expanded effort to revoke citizenship obtained through fraud.

According to the fact sheet, denaturalisation claims had so far been filed against 88 people deemed ineligible for US citizenship.

In another measure, the government said it had terminated taxpayer-funded benefits for more than 1.4 million undocumented migrants who were allegedly receiving public assistance improperly.

The administration further said visa processing had been paused for 75 high-risk countries as part of efforts to protect national security and reduce visa overstays, while screening requirements for existing visa programmes had also been strengthened.

It also reported efforts to remove tens of thousands of undocumented migrants from voter rolls in several states, arguing that voting rights were reserved for US citizens.

The administration has additionally revised the US citizenship test to place greater emphasis on applicants’ knowledge of American history, government and national values.

Trump began his renewed immigration push shortly after returning to office, signing an executive order declaring a crisis at the southern border and directing measures aimed at stopping illegal entries.

The US Mission in Nigeria has also repeatedly warned Nigerian visa applicants and holders to comply with American immigration laws, noting that visas could be revoked over criminal activity, overstays, fraud or conduct considered a threat to public safety.

The Mission has urged Nigerians visiting the United States to use their visas only for their authorised purposes and leave the country before their permitted period of stay expires.
