Police Officers Remanded Over Killing of Delta Singer

A court in Delta State has ordered the remand of a police officer and four other suspects over the alleged killing of a 28-year-old singer, Oghenemine Mene Ogidi, in Effurun area of the state.

The accused officer, Usman Nuhu, appeared before the Delta State High Court alongside four others identified as Onoloko Dauroupamo, Okoh Kelechi, Goodluck Kingsley, and Omonigho Ahweyevu.

They were arraigned on Monday under charge number DTHC/ASB/CR/M/66c/2026 and ordered to be held at the Ogwashi-Uku Correctional Centre pending further hearing.

The case has drawn widespread public attention following the circulation of a viral video in April, which appeared to show the singer being restrained by a police officer before being shot. The footage sparked public outrage and renewed calls for police accountability in Nigeria.

A police spokesperson in Delta State, Bright Edafe, had earlier confirmed that the officer involved was arrested and transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja for internal disciplinary procedures.

The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, also approved the recommendation of the Force Disciplinary Committee for the officer’s dismissal from service.

The defendants are expected to remain in custody as the trial continues, while the court is yet to announce a date for the next hearing.

The case continues to generate debate over policing standards and the need for stronger accountability within Nigeria’s security forces.
