Troops Capture Suspected Foreign ISIS Operative In Borno

Nigerian troops have arrested a suspected foreign Islamic State (ISIS) operative believed to be an Arab of Moroccan origin during a counter-terrorism operation in Borno State, in what security sources described as a major intelligence breakthrough in the ongoing campaign against insurgents in the Lake Chad region.

The suspect was apprehended in Cross Kauwa, Kukawa Local Government Area, after troops successfully repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on the community.

The insurgents reportedly fled the scene under military pressure, abandoning operational equipment as they retreated.

According to security sources, troops recovered high-frequency handheld radios and other communication devices left behind during the failed assault.

Intelligence obtained from the recovered equipment enabled security forces to expand their operations across the Lake Chad Islands axis and towards Abadam Local Government Area, where the suspected foreign ISIS operative was eventually intercepted and taken into custody.

According to counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, and quoted by Truth Live News Media, the suspect had already been under intelligence surveillance after investigators jointly analysed video footage recovered from a camcorder seized during the Cross Kauwa operation.

The device reportedly belonged to a terrorist cameraman killed during the encounter.

The forensic review of the footage, carried out with the support of international partners, reportedly helped investigators identify the suspect and establish suspected links to the Islamic State network operating across the Lake Chad Basin.

Military authorities have since airlifted the suspect to a secure facility, where he is undergoing interrogation and intelligence exploitation.

Investigators are expected to determine his role within the terrorist organisation, how he entered Nigeria, and whether he participated in operational planning, training, communications or propaganda activities.

Security analysts noted that extremist groups frequently deploy media operatives alongside combat units to document attacks for propaganda, recruitment and operational assessment, making the recovery of the camcorder and subsequent arrest a major intelligence success.

The development is also expected to provide fresh insights into the structure, financing and cross-border operations of terrorist groups active in the region.

Security agencies have long maintained that while ISWAP largely recruits fighters locally, foreign operatives from countries including Iraq, Somalia and Morocco have played specialist roles in communications, explosives handling, media production and strategic coordination.

Military officials said interrogation of the suspect is ongoing, stressing that further operational details remain confidential to protect ongoing counter-terrorism operations.

They added that intelligence gathered from the suspect could help security agencies dismantle additional terrorist cells and expose transnational routes used by insurgent networks operating across the Lake Chad Basin.
