The Nigeria Citizens Watch for Good Governance and the Edo People’s Initiative for Peace and Security have praised the establishment of the 83 Division of the Nigerian Army in Benin City, describing the development as a significant step towards strengthening security, promoting stability and driving socio-economic development in Edo State and neighbouring states.
The groups, led by their Chairman, Comrade Innocent Ajayi, expressed their support during a joint peaceful rally in Benin City held to welcome and celebrate the creation of the new military division.
Ajayi commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the establishment of the division, saying its presence in Edo State would bring military operations closer to the people and enhance the ability of security agencies to respond promptly and effectively to emerging security threats.
According to him, the new division would play a critical role in tackling insecurity, particularly kidnapping, armed robbery, cultism and other forms of violent crime that threaten the lives, businesses and livelihoods of residents.
He said the establishment of the division was not only a significant security intervention but also a confidence-building measure capable of creating a safer environment for investment, commerce and sustainable development across Edo State and the wider region.
The groups urged residents to support the Nigerian Army and other security agencies by providing timely and credible information that could assist in preventing crime and maintaining peace.
They also called on relevant authorities to provide the new division with the necessary personnel, equipment and logistical support to enable it discharge its responsibilities effectively.
Ajayi stressed that a secure Edo State would provide a stronger foundation for economic growth and improved quality of life, expressing optimism that the 83 Division would make a lasting contribution to peace and security in the state and neighbouring communities.
He also commended the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, and the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for their leadership and commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s security architecture.
According to him, the division would improve coordination among security agencies, enhance surveillance of roads, farmlands and waterways, and restore confidence among farmers, traders and residents.
Ajayi said peace remained essential to economic growth, noting that improved security would create a more conducive environment for investment, commerce, jobs and development.
He pledged the groups’ support and cooperation with the military and other security agencies, while urging citizens to embrace peace and lawful conduct.
The groups, however, appealed to President Tinubu to sustain adequate funding, equipment and institutional support for the military to enable it effectively tackle insecurity across the country.
Ajayi said the people of Benin welcomed the 83 Division as “family” and pledged continued support for efforts aimed at promoting peace, security and good governance in Edo State and Nigeria.
Also speaking, the Director of Action and Mobilization for the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Zone B, South-South, Osakpolor Isaac Osaretin, assured president Bola Tinubu of the students support for taking the bold step in setting up the 83 Division in the state.
