AAU Lecturer Dies In Ekpoma Hotel After Alleged Encounter With 21-Year-Old Woman

A lecturer with Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Matthew Uwuigbe, has been found dead in a hotel room in Ekpoma, Edo State, following an alleged encounter with a 21-year-old girl.

The incident, which occurred in Ekpoma, headquarters of Esan West Local Government Area, was reported to the police at about 8am on Monday, October 5, 2026.

Uwuigbe, a lecturer in the university’s Department of Medical Laboratory Science, was reportedly found dead in the hotel room after allegedly engaging the services of the woman.

Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, said the hotel owner, manager and the woman who was reportedly with the deceased had been arrested and detained for questioning.

According to the police spokesperson, investigators are working to establish the circumstances surrounding Uwuigbe’s death.

She said Uwuigbe, who was believed to be in his 50s, had lodged at the hotel and engaged the services of the 21-year-old woman.

The lecturer reportedly sent the woman out of the room to purchase water.

However, upon her return, she allegedly found Uwuigbe lying motionless inside the hotel room.

The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, as police investigators have commenced inquiries to determine what happened before and after the lecturer was found unresponsive.

ASP Ikoedem said the deceased’s remains had been deposited at a hospital mortuary for preservation pending further investigation.

The police have also commenced questioning of the hotel owner, manager and the woman who was reportedly with the deceased before his death.

The Edo State Police Command said the investigation would establish the cause of death and determine whether any criminal offence was committed in connection with the incident.
