UYO – Akwa Ibom teachers in the state’s public schools are to receive a ₦50,000 wardrobe allowance each, as Governor Umo Eno announced fresh welfare measures aimed at strengthening the teaching workforce.
The governor also approved ₦500,000 support for each of the 1,776 registered private schools operating across the state.
The announcements were contained in a statement posted on the social media handle of Ekerete Udo, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, and sighted by Truth Live News.
Speaking during the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration at the Uyo Township Stadium, Eno said the welfare measures were part of efforts to improve conditions for teachers and support education stakeholders in the state.
The governor specifically approved ₦50,000 wardrobe allowance for each teacher in the state’s employ, alongside other measures targeted at improving the education sector.
He also approved ₦500,000 support for each of the 1,776 registered private schools, which provide education services alongside government-owned institutions.
The governor said teachers must reciprocate the government’s investment in the sector through greater commitment, accountability and professionalism.
He urged them to remain in school, improve their capacity through continuous training and retraining, and give their best to the education of Akwa Ibom children.
The welfare measures formed part of a broader package announced by the governor, including the approval of 2,000 additional teachers for recruitment into the state’s primary schools.
Eno also directed the completion of the state NUT Secretariat and announced the upgrade of the State College of Education, Afaha Nsit, to a University of Education, with Prof. Philip Afaha appointed as its pioneer Vice-Chancellor.
The governor’s announcements came against the backdrop of his declaration of a state of emergency in the education sector, with a high-powered committee mandated to review the system and produce a comprehensive document for upgrading standards.
The measures were welcomed by teachers’ representatives at the event, with the National President of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Audu Amba, represented by Ofonime Ekanem, commending the governor’s interventions in the sector.
