The independence of Nigeria’s electoral commission and declining or fragile public confidence in election administration are set to take centre stage as Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Edo State, Obo Effanga, joins a dialogue on electoral issues ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Effanga is scheduled to feature as a guest at the ninth episode of the Road to 2027 Nigeria Elections Issues and Concerns Dialogue Series, organised by Rally for Peaceful Election on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.
The session, themed “INEC Independence, Institutional Trust and Electoral Administration,” will examine the appointment of Resident Electoral Commissioners, election logistics, distribution of election materials, institutional independence and measures to restore public confidence.
An announcement issued by the dialogue’s conveners, Dr. Bright Oniovokukor and Comr. Jude Obasanmi, PhD, said the meeting will hold virtually from 11 a.m. to noon, with participants expected to access the Zoom room from 10:45 a.m.
The organisers said the dialogue forms part of efforts to sustain public engagement on issues and concerns surrounding Nigeria’s preparations for the 2027 elections.

The discussion is expected to provide an opportunity to examine the relationship between electoral institutions’ independence, administrative processes and citizens’ confidence in the credibility of elections.
Meanwhile, Effanga’s educational qualifications, according to the supplied biography, include a National Diploma in Mass Communications from The Polytechnic Calabar, an LL.B from the University of Calabar and a master’s degree in Human Rights from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom.
The organisers have encouraged interested members of the public and other stakeholders to participate in the virtual session.
