Juventus legend Alex Del Piero has thrown his weight behind Jude Bellingham’s candidacy for the Ballon d’Or award, citing the Real Madrid star’s impressive performance in the Champions League final.
According to him, Bellingham played a crucial role in Real Madrid’s 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund to solidify his status as a key player for the Spanish giants.
Del Piero, a former Ballon d’Or winner himself, said that Bellingham’s effectiveness on the pitch and his ability to improve his team make him a deserving candidate for the award.
“I hope the Ballon d’Or is tied to a player’s real efficacy within the team, not just victories and defeats,” Del Piero told Sky Italia.
Del Piero also stressed the need to consider a player’s overall performance throughout the year, rather than just their achievements in major tournaments like the Euros and World Cup.
“There are many players who have incredible years, and we should recognize that,” he added.
Truth Live News reports that Del Piero joins the growing list of football luminaries who believe the young Englishman has what it takes to win the coveted award.
