Suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, today (Tuesday) was granted bail in the sum of N20million and a surety in like sum by a Federal High Court sitting in Lagos.
He was granted bail after pleading not guilty to the two counts bordering on the alleged illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Recall that Emefiele has been in DSS custody for over six weeks after his arrest and detention.
Emefiele’s lawyer, Mr. Joseph Daudu, SAN, had after his client pleaded not guilty to the two count charge, applied for his bail, contending that the offense for which Emefiele was changed is bailable.
The Presiding Justice Nicholas Oweibo after listening to the submissions of Emefiele’s counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN), rejected the Federal Government’s claim that Emefiele was a flight risk.
He ruled that the government failed to provide any fact to support its claim and ordered that Emefiele be held at the Ikoyi Correctional Centre, pending the perfection of his bail.
Subsequently, fixed the trial for November 14, 2023.
