It has been reported that Sir Bobby Charlton passed away at age 86.
Manchester United stated in a statement issued on Saturday afternoon:
“Manchester United are in mourning following the passing of Sir Bobby Charlton, one of the greatest and most beloved players in the history of our club.Sir Bobby was a hero to millions, not just in Manchester, or the United Kingdom, but wherever football is played around the world.
“His unparalleled record of achievement, character and service will be forever etched in the history of Manchester United and English football; and his legacy will live on through the life-changing work of the Sir Bobby Charlton Foundation. The club’s heartfelt sympathies are with his wife Lady Norma, his daughters and grandchildren, and all who loved him.”
One of Britain’s greatest goal scorers, the football player is best known for this trait.
At the age of 16, Sir Bobby joined Manchester United on June 1, 1953.
He played in 758 matches and scored 249 goals throughout his 17 years with Manchester United.
Only Ryan Giggs in 2008 and Wayne Rooney in 2017 were able to topple these records, respectively.
In 1966, the same year he won the Ballon d’Or, Sir Bobby was also a member of the England side that won the World Cup.
He continues to rank as England’s third-highest goal scorer.
On December 14, 2008, Sir Bobby received the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Lifetime Achievement Award.
And in March of the following year, 2009, Manchester granted him release.
Old Trafford’s South Stand will now be known as the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand, Manchester United announced on February 15, 2016.
Sir Bobby’s dedication to football and athletics helped make England’s World Cup and Olympic Games bids successful, especially the London 2012 campaign.
Participating in charitable endeavors is another way to bring attention to a number of crucial concerns.
In a statement, his family said: “It is with great sadness that we share the news that Sir Bobby passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning. He was surrounded by his family. His family would like to pass on their thanks to everyone who has contributed to his care and for the many people who have loved and supported him. We would request that the family’s privacy be respected at this time.”
